An average of over 49% voters exercised their franchise in the bypolls to 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh today while over 53% voting was recorded in the lone Lok Sabha constituency of Firozabad.

Chief electoral officer of the state (CEO) Umesh Sinha told newspersons here that the polling remained incident-free amid tight security arrangement in the state.

Though there were some complaints of malpractices from rival political parties, none of them have been confirmed so far, the CEO said, adding that complaints of malfunctioning in the EVMs and other such problems were redressed on the spot.

He said that there had been an incident of firing and scuffle in Pratappur village in Firozabad Lok Sabha constituency during which a woman and a child suffered injuries but it was not poll related, the CEO said.

Lucknow West seat witnessed the minimum turnout at 28% while Lalitpur recorded the maximum at 60 per cent, the CEO said, adding that in Firozabad 53.50% voters cast their votes. A total of 177 candidates are in the fray for 12 seats that have an electorate of 49 lakh.
