Even as the state has cut down electricity generation due to lack of demand from other states, around 4,600 MW of additional power generation capacity is likely to go on stream in the state in the current financial year.

The state's total installed power generation capacity is 13,140 MW, which is projected to cross 17,700 MW by the end of year 2011-12.

According to energy department officials, two 800 MW units of Tata's Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) at Mundra are scheduled to go on stream in the current fiscal.

Two units of 660 MW each of Adani Power Limited at its Mundra plant, and Essar's 800 MW power plant at Vadinar are also slated to start power generation in this year, said officials.
"Gujarat is the only state which has successfully implemented various power projects. This has been achieved in spite of the fact that the state does not have coal and gas resources," state's energy minister Saurabh Patel, told DNA.

He said that not only has the state attracted private players, but even public sector units have significantly added their power generation capacities in recent years.

"We are confident that Gujarat will continue the journey to becoming the Country's Power Capital," Patel added.
In addition to units of private power producers, state owned companies and their subsidiaries will also add significant power generation capacities in the current year.

Gujarat State Energy Generation Limited (GSEG) and GSPC Pipavav Power Company (GPPC), both Special Purpose Vehicles formed by state-owned Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, are expected to commission their power plants during the year.
GSEG is setting up a 351 MW unit at Hazira, while GPPC's 351 MW plant is coming up at Rajula in Amreli.

The 250 MW lignite-based power plant of Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) is also slated to start commercial power generation during the fiscal itself.
"The state's installed power generation capacity is poised for a quantum jump in the current year with commissioning of several power projects," DJ Pandian, principal secretary, energy department, said.
