A four-year-old child was kidnapped for ransom and later killed by abductors in Surat.

The child, Akash Teli, was kidnapped on Thursday evening and his body was recovered from an irrigation canal near Chhapra-Bhatta in Amroli on Saturday evening.

Cops are still clueless about the kidnappers.

Teli was last spotted playing with his friends at his residence in Adarsh Society in Kapodara, where Janmashtami celebration was going on, on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, Govind - Akash's father -  got a phone call, informing him that his son has been kidnapped, but the caller didn't demand any ransom.

After 12 hours, he received another call, asking him to meet the caller at Valsad railway station, with Rs1 lakh as ransom. Govind, along with Varachha police, went to Valsad on Friday evening and waited at railway station for more than 18 hours but the kidnappers did not turn up.

They returned to Surat on Saturday afternoon. Later at 9pm, Akash's body was found beside a canal at Chhapra-Bhatta.

While Akash was kidnapped and murdered within 48 hours, there was nothing police could do in the case. Though Govind had contacted police on the very first day, the cops waited for further development in the case and came into action only after Govind received a ransom call.

Siddhart Khatri, DCP, suspects involvement of some known persons in the case.

"We are collecting proofs and other information found during investigation. It seems that there is involvement of persons known to Govind. SOG and Crime Branch are investigating the case," Khatri said.

Akash was cremated on Sunday. Not happy with police action, more than 150 people along with Akash's parents gathered in front of Varachha police station in the afternoon.

They raised slogans and demanded strict action against the kidnappers.

"We want police to arrest abductors at the earliest. Had the police responded timely, Akash could have been saved. We will continue our protest till culprits are nabbed," Govind said.
