Two extremists of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were killed, a camp of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) was busted, and a powerful bomb was recovered today as security forces stepped up their operations in the run-up to Independence Day in Assam.

According to police, an area commander and a bomb expert of the NDFB were killed in encounters with security forces.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the police and the army launched an operation at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district and killed the extremist identified as Bhim Boro alias Gandhi. Two others escaped. A 7.65 pistol, four rounds of live cartridges, a grenade, and extortion notes were recovered from Boro's possession.

In a separate joint operation by the army and the police, another NDFB ultra was killed at Monabari tea estate in Sonitpur district, a source said.

After receiving specific information that NDFB militants were hiding in the tea estate to disrupt Independence Day celebrations in the area, security forces launched an operation yesterday.

One  militant was killed in an encounter this morning. The others escaped. An M-20 pistol with four rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle were recovered from the encounter site.

Meanwhile, in a major setback to Ulfa, the army today busted a transit camp of the outfit situated inside the Dihing reserve forest along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Dibrugarh district.

Acting on information given by arrested Ulfa cadres yesterday, the army launched an operation inside the reserve forest and busted the camp this morning. But the militants there escaped.

Two US-made revolvers, two single-barrel guns, a huge quantity of explosives, including 10kg of RDX, two detonators, fuse wires, one AK-47 magazine with 90 rounds of ammunition, 40 rounds of single-barrel ammunition, other assorted munitions, seven combat dresses with 'Made in Thailand' tags, and huge quantities of medicines were recovered from the camp.

The security forces suspect that a group of Ulfa members had come from Burma and set up the camp to create disturbances in the state in the run-up to Independence Day.

In another incident, a powerful IED (improvised explosive device) was recovered by a joint patrolling team of the police and the Central Reserve Police Force from under a bridge on the national highway at Tangni in Darrang district. It was later defused by the army's bomb experts.
