2 newborn girls found abandoned in orissa

Two newborn girls were found abandoned in a paper carton at the railway station here and admitted to a hospital in a critical state.

The babies were found inside a carton under a goods cart at a desolate place at the railway station after some passengers heard their cries on Saturday last.

As soon as the news spread, many couples have flocked the SCB Medical College and Hospital here in the hope of adopting the girls.

Rescued by railway police, the newborns have been undergoing treatment under the supervision of a team of doctors and attended by a volunteer of a local orphanage.

Doctors said the four-day-old babies are critical and all efforts are being made to save them. Meanwhile, many childless couples have offered to adopt the infants and are also ready to pay for the treatment costs.

"Following reports about the abandoned girls, I have come all the way from Ganjam, around 150-km away, to adopt them," a middle-aged woman waiting outside the newborn ward with her husband said.

Another young couple from Jajpur was also hopeful of adopting the babies.

"I am ready to take the children for better treatment outside the state," Bidyadhar Swain of Jajpur said, with his wife nodding in support.

"We have already started investigation into the incident and are looking forward to trace the mother of the babies," Cuttack railway police inspector Trinath Mishra said.
