1,741 tonne of solid waste removed after rains in Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials are making efforts to prevent the spread of disease in the city.

Severe waterlogging in most parts of Ahmedabad following 14 inches of rain on Sunday has left behind piles of muck and garbage — an ideal ground for breeding of flies and mosquitoes.

Around 1,205 workers under the supervision of 7,403 AMC officials cleaned 1,741 tonne of solid waste till Tuesday.  The civic body has used 268 vehicles and emptied around 415 containers to remove the solid waste from the city roads.

The AMC officials claim that they have sprinkled 30,920 kg of pesticides and identified 864 hazardous spots. "We have started night cleaning to speed up the work and avoid a health scare. A team of around 25 to 30 people clean one road at a time in a ward. This has ensured better cleaning," said municipal commissioner IP Gautam.

He said that the health department has also sprung into action.
"Around 550 volunteers have sprinkled pesticides, used fumigation and guppi fish to clean water," he said. He said that 520 sanitary supervisor staff and 10,000 safai kamdars have been pressed into service. The AMC has used 149 small to medium size fogging machines around 14273 houses in the city.

Some 1000 malaria and para malaria staff has surveyed 17,3290 houses, of which necessary action was taken in the case of 2359 houses where mosquito breeding was found.  Around 914 blood samples were taken and 54330 chlorine tablets distributed.

The AMC officials also claims to have destroyed 1222 kg of unhygienic food before it reached the public for consumption.
In the most affected areas of New CG Road, Man Sarovar, Chandkheda, around 1500 kg of lime powder and 500 litre of meletheon apart from 200 litre of liquid pesticides have been used.
