Chairman of Essel Group Dr Subhash Chandra interacted with students of IIM Lucknow on Wednesday and spoke about leadership abilities and honesty, as part of the Dr. Subhash Chandra Show. He also shared his insights as a self-made entrepreneur and answered questions about business acumen.

Around 130 students from various colleges of Lucknow attended the event. Shubhangi from Sherwood college pursuing an MBA said, "Subhash sir motivates students on their career as well as on issues of national importance."

Here are some of the questions asked by students during the interaction:

How do you deal with situations like low TRPs?

In life, there are always ups and downs, but you should keep working hard. If you decide not to accept failure, you will never fail. When there are problems in life, you should solve them with loyalty and integrity. One must not choose shortcuts to overcome obstacles. Today, most people think that if they are loyal, they may not be successful. But this is not true.

How can we change the system?

The right person should not be in the wrong place. If you are loyal, no one will trouble you.

Is loyalty only a perception or something else?

Loyalty is of different types. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not usurp money, but he let wrong things happen while he was in office. Once, I invested some money from my friends in a wrong way. But eventually I did not get any returns from it. I decided then, that one may face a few problems while choosing the path of integrity, but in the long run, it will reap rich dividends. A loyal person gets justice sooner or later. If you are loyal you will never have to bow your head and your status in society will remain high. People will support you and your business will also grow.

Manjunath, a manager for the Indian Oil Corporation who was murdered for sealing a corrupt petrol station in Uttar Pradesh, raised his voice. But he got killed.

One should not lose one's cool. Manjunath wanted to come amidst the people. However, one should first prepare to fight and then attack at the right time after analysing one's strength and weaknesses. One should work on and improve the weaknesses and change it into strengths.

The coal scam shows that people are making the system corrupt.

Every person who was involved in the coal scam said they were loyal. The Supreme Court eventually cancelled all the blocks, but did not send anyone to jail.

One of the students expressed her opinion saying, "By being dishonest a person can earn money, but only hard-earned money can give you respect. This respect can last for generations." Another student shared, "My father filled the column marked 'very low income' in my scholarship form. At that time I wondered, isn't this dishonesty? I believe that before pointing our finger at someone else, we should look at ourselves. Elaborating on that thought, Dr Chandra said that there are not only pros, but also cons of being loyal. "My employees come to me and say that they did not get an increment because they did not keep their manager in good humour. Even if you are forced to be disloyal because of the situation, it will be termed as disloyalty. However, if you remain loyal, your qualities will not remain hidden and eventually your work will be noticed and appreciated.
