Union Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, speaking to India Today TV channel, said that the ban on porn websites would be removed and only websites that showed child pornography would be banned. Prasad said that the IT ministry would soon issue a new notification and said that the government wasn't anti-liberty and anti-people as they were being made out to be.

The government had received a lot of criticism from all quarters after users in India on Saturday realised that several porn sites were not accessible. It soon emerged that the DOT (Department of Telecommunications) had issued a notice to internet service providers to ban 857 websites that had been compiled, to be pornographic.

These websites surprisingly included sites like College Humor. Users reported getting the message: “The site has been blocked as per the instructions of Competent Authorities.”

It seems like the government reacted to the massive outrage that ensured after several users reiterated that they were unable to visit various websites. Author Chetan Bhagat had tweeted: “Don't ban porn. Ban men ogling, leering, brushing past, groping, molesting, abusing, humiliating and raping women. Ban non-consent. Not sex. Porn ban is anti-freedom, impractical, not enforceable. Politically not very smart too. avoidable. Let's not manage people's private lives.”

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor had tweeted: “Ban idiots who think banning things is going to make a difference to Indian mentality.. #sooverthisgovt #NextBanIdea #sick #ashamed". Bollywood director Ram Gopal Verma had tweeted: History proved it multiple times that if anytime anything is banned it will just gather strength in the underground. The best way to tackle a presumed menace is to bring it out in open rather than pushing it under the rug or pretending it doesn't exist.”
