In a sickening tale of love gone wrong, a jealous lover is believed to have not only murdered his partner but severed her upper and lower body parts in order to avoid detection and dumped them in nearby drains. Delhi police officials say that the crime, committed in a fit of passion, took nearly a week of painstaking detective work to solve.

On December 3, acting on a call to the PCR Police Control Room, police discovered a body of a 43-year-old woman dumped in a drain near Captain Gaur Marg in Amar Colony. On reaching the location, they found the upper body part of a woman chopped up an in an air bag.  The next day, on December 4, another PCR call led police to another drain near a temple in Sriniwaspuri.  The two body parts were matched up in an AIIMS mortuary and then a case was registered.

Senior officials said that it was not easy going to nab the accused but their persistence paid off. The photograph of the woman, along with thousands of posters, was circulated in the south Delhi area, asking people to come forward with any information that they might have.

A manhunt was then conducted which involved door-to-door searches in the south Delhi area. On December 5, police officials noticed a tea shop near the East of Kailash area which had been shut for the last three days. On further enquiry, they found the tea shop was owned by the murder victim who resided in a rented room at the Dasghara colony in Garhi.

Further enquiries revealed that the victim had been in a live-in relationship with a man from Odisha identified as Balram. Police sources claim that they arrested Balram from a nearby park and that he had confessed to murdering the victim.

Asked as to the motive for the murder, officials revealed that Balram had told interrogators that he had been living with the victim for the last eight years, and around three years back he had moved back to Odisha to be with his family. In October, he returned to Delhi and again started living with her. However, he suspected that she was having illicit relationships with other men as well.

“On the intervening night of December 1, he quarrelled with her, and both of them started accusing each other of having illicit relationships. The following day, he hit her head and back with a hammer. He then cut her body in two parts, stuffed them in a bag, and threw them in different drains. He then told neighbours she had gone to her village in Chennai,” said DCP (South-East) Romil Baniya.

The DCP added that a hammer and knives of three different sizes used in committing the crime had been recovered by the police. Further investigations revealed that Balram had used a saw (used for cutting pipes) to cut up her body.

The victim has a son who works at a Reliance Fresh store in Chennai.
