Vice-President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday reiterated that he does not want ministers and members in the House to 'beg'. In a bid to do away with the archaic practice of the ministers saying "I beg to lay the papers...listed against my name in today's order paper," Naidu once again told fellow members of the House that there is no need to use the expression.

He had on the opening day of the Winter Session of Parliament advised the ministers and members to end the practice and just say "I rise to present the papers listed against my name..."

However, on Friday when Minister of State for Law and Justice PP Chaudhary used the term 'beg' while laying papers, Naidu reminded him of the advice.

"No begging please," Naidu told Chaudhary.

He said probably Chaudhary was not present when he had made the suggestion earlier and advised him to avoid using the word "I beg" while laying the papers.

"It would be good if begging word is avoided," Naidu said.

Ministers and members have been avoiding the expression so far and following Naidu's advice. Chaudhary was quick to learn and did not use the word beg when he was called to lay a different set of papers later.

Naidu also asked for members not to be seated while speaking. He has been a strict disciplinarian, often reminding members not to get involved in direct confrontations with each other, and not to deviate from their topics.

Referring to an incident during the Question Hour when BK Hariprasad of the Congress used certain phrases, Naidu said he has decided to close the matter after the member met him this morning, and added that his remarks were made on the spur of the moment and he held the Chair in high esteem.
