A constable of NIA was arrested by Gujarat Police for allegedly extorting money from a businessman, following which he was dismissed from service.
Constable Devilal Gopaldas Vaishnav, a BSF constable who was absorbed in National Investigation Agency (NIA), was on a holiday to Ahmedabad where he contacted a businessman alleging that his name had figured in an interrogation of terrorists in hawala link in Jammu and Kashmir.
The constable was allegedly demanding Rs 1 crore from the businessman and finally settled at Rs 60 lakh, official sources said. The businessman informed the crime branch who laid a trap after informing the NIA top brass about it.
The constable was arrested while he was allegedly receiving the money from the businessman, they said. NIA spokesperson said that the constable was dimissed under Article 311 (withdrawal of Presidential Pleasure) after an internal enquiry allegedly found him guilty.
