An unbelievable 2,245 stones were removed from the gall bladder of a patient in Niphad of Nashik district. The patient was reported to be stable and improving. The operation was performed laprascopically by Dr Sachin Devre, recently at the Shree Sai multi-speciality hospital in Niphad.

During one of his regular visits to Niphad, Dr Devere met 65-year-old Karbhari Sanap, who had complaints of upper abdominal pain and acidity. He also saw symptoms of obesity, flatulence and other signs that indicated a necessity to check for gall stones. Sanap was recommended to undergo sonography. "The sonography report showed that the patient had a fairly large number of pigment gall bladder stones. At that point of time, it appeared that there could be 20-25 stones. So, the patient was recommended to undergo an operation to remove the gall bladder," said Dr Devre.

The operation was done laparoscopically through a small incision on the stomach. "We noticed through the laparoscope camera that there were multiple stones. So, we decided to make an incision the size of the gall bladder and remove it completely. Had it been done in pieces, there could have been a major risk of the stones slipping into the duct, causing further complications," Dr Devre explained.

When the gall bladder was finally removed and cut open, the doctors were shocked to see the number of stones. "There were 2,245 stones measuring 2-4 mm. This high number of stones has never been heard in this region before. Hence, we applied for the Limca Book of Records. They have shown a positive response," said Dr Devre.

Dr Devre, who has also worked in a charitable hospital in Meghalaya, said cases of gall stones were more commonly seen in western countries, but because of the lifestyle change, we are seeing them here as well.

Cause

Gall stones are caused by deposits of excess cholesterol or calcium deposits or pigments or bilirubin. They could be caused by obesity or in persons with digestive disorders. The type of stones differs. The patient has been suggested some lifestyle changes, such as eating meals on a particular time, taking care of cholesterol, and so on.
