In the 50th episode of his address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said, the greatest contribution of the radio show Mann Ki Baat has been “the enhancement of a feeling of positivity in our society”. He also hailed the contribution of All India Radio in what he termed as a country-wide revolution.

Modi also took to the recounting of an incident in 1998, when he was made the in-charge of Himachal Pradesh state. He said that one evening, while making his way across the state on a cold evening, he came across a tea-seller and stopped by at his stall. The tea-seller, despite inadequate winter clothing, was happy and offered Modi a ladoo. On asking, the man told him that the ladoo was to celebrate the “bomb” India has exploded.

Modi further said that the man was speaking of India’s nuclear blast at Pokhran. “It was then that he elaborated on the day of the nuclear test and the-then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announcing it to the media. The tea-seller said he started dancing on listening to it on the radio. It was a matter of great intrigue to see a lone tea-seller in a remote, snow-clad hilly area, aware of the ongoings in the country via a radio. It led me to realise that this was a medium truly connected to the masses,” said Modi, explaining his inspiration behind starting the radio programme on October 3, 2014, soon after he took over as the Prime Minister.

He also praised AIR for the success of the medium and said that the radio body had conducted a survey; the results showed that 70 per cent of respondents on an average are regular listeners and that most of them believe that the greatest contribution of the programme is positivity. “The medium of Mann Ki Baat has promoted mass revolutions; #indiapositive has been the subject of an extensive discussion,” he said, adding that every month the  show draws lakhs of letters, and comments on the App as well as on MyGov.

He also paid his respects to Babasaheb Ambedkar and Guru Nanak.
