NEW DELHI: A 58-year-old man was strangulated allegedly by a domestic help and his accomplice in his home in east Delhi early on Monday morning, the second incident involving unverified servants in the capital in the past three days.

Anil Sharma was found dead with a bed sheet around his neck and legs and hands tied at around 1:30 am in a room in his Farz Bazar residence by his mother Indira Sharma (74), a senior police official said.

Sankar Thapa, the servant who was working with them for the past one year, and his young friend whose identity was not immediately ascertained, were missing from the scene. The police verification of Thapa was not done.

The other family members, including Indira's widowed daughter-in-law and her children, were not present in the house at the time of incident as they had gone to Allahabad to attend a religious ceremony.

Indira had woken up to go to bathroom at around 1:30 am when she saw the lights in her daughter-in-law's room and thought that they had returned home late in the night.

Hearing some sound from the room, the official said, Indira went inside where she found a stranger sitting there.

As she was asking him who he was, the official said, Thapa came downstairs with two buckets of clothes and started laughing at her.

Becoming suspicious, she went upstairs to inform her son Anil about it, only to find him dead.

The room was also ransacked, the official said, adding a hunt is on to nab the accused.

This is the second such incident involving unverified servants in the capital in the past three days.

On June six, two domestic helps allegedly ransacked the house of a businessman in north-west Delhi and decamped with cash and jewellery worth about Rs 10 lakh.

An elderly couple was murdered and their house ransacked in a Niti Bagh area in south Delhi allegedly by their domestic help on May 26.

With several cases of crime involving servants shocking the capital in recent times, Delhi Police have launched a special drive to check the antecedents of domestic helps.

During the drive, Delhi Police have found that servants have been employed in 20,744 houses till May 18.

The servants were found unverified in 58 per cent of houses.
