In a grim reminder of the recent Badaun double gang rape and murder incident, the semi-nude body of a gang rape victim was found hanging from a tree in Hastinapur area of Meerut on Thursday.

However, that is just another addition to the list of horrific cases of women being routinely raped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh. In Mohanlalganj area of the state capital, too, the naked body of a middle-aged woman was found in a school on Thursday morning, just hours before former US president Bill Clinton was scheduled to visit a village, a few kilometres away.

Police sources said the woman had been repeatedly stabbed all over the body, and her private parts were mangled with a metal object, bringing back horrendous memories of the Delhi gang rape case of December 16 last year. What is particularly startling is that the gang rape and murder were committed in the area which has been under strict security surveillance due to the high-profile Clinton visit.

The list continues. A 20-year-old girl immolated herself in Bilhaur area of Kanpur as she could not take the constant eve-teasing over the past two months by goons of the area any more. Her repeated plaints to the local police had allegedly gone unheard. She succumbed to severe burns in a hospital soon afterwards.

In a similar incident, a woman doused herself with kerosene and tried to set herself afire right in front of the high court here, though security men posted there managed to save her. The woman belonging to Shravasti district of east UP runs a tea stall in front of the Malhipur police station there. She had been complaining to the local police about the lurid advances a zila panchayat member and a former SO of this police station had been making towards her.

According to the police, in the Meerut case, the body of Kamla Devi (42), resident of Manoharpur colony in Hastinapur, was found hanging from a tree Thursday morning. Her father-in-law has named three people in his FIR. However, police did not confirm his allegations of rape. Police said her husband was in jail, and the murder could be related to the case in which he had been arrested for a fight with the named accused.
