A day after Venkaiah Naidu took a dig at the AIMIM president for his refusal to say 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday raised slogans of ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ and ‘Jai Hind’ at a party meeting in Lucknow.

Stating that Muslims have made huge sacrifices for the country and didn't need to furnish any certificate of patriotism to anyone, Owaisi raised slogans of ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ and ‘Jai Hind’, reported Indian Express.

“We (Muslims) do not need ‘deshbhakt’ certification from anyone. We do not require any proof. Those who are questioning our patriotism are traitors. From 1857 to independence, these people had no existence while we shed our blood and were hanged by Britishers. We never pleaded for forgiving our sentence," he added.

Owaisi also attacked BJP and Samajwadi Party, terming them as 'two sides of the same coin' and alleged that while RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has been given liberty to hold meetings in Lucknow, a ban had been imposed on him.

The Hyderabad MP said his party considered SP and BJP as their main rival in 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Earlier, rejecting RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's suggestion of teaching students to chant slogans hailing mother India, Owaisi , the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad had said he would not chant 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' even if a knife is put to his throat. He had added that nowhere in the Constitution does it says that one should chant the slogan.

"I don't chant that slogan. What are you going to do, Bhagwat sahab," Owaisi had said at a rally in Udgir tehsil of Latur district in Maharashtra on February 13.

AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan was also suspended from Maharashtra Assembly for refusing to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', with legislators cutting across party lines pressing for action against him through a unanimous resolution.

The Shiv Sena has demanded the cancellation of Owaisi's Indian citizenship. Hindu Sena activists had also allegedly put up posters at the entrance of his official residence on Ashoka Road.
