Yesterday all the opposition MLAs of Gujarat protested against ruling BJP regarding high fuel prices and on Wednesday morning they reached Assembly riding on cycles to attend current monsoon session. But as soon as the government brought a bill proposing increment in salaries for all the elected representatives including members of the cabinet, the mood changed dramatically. All the protests melted and legislators including that of the opposition welcomed the government’s initiative of increasing salary by 25%.

Bill titled 'The Gujarat Salaries and Allowances of Members, Speaker and deputy speaker of the Gujarat legislative assembly, Ministers and Leader of the opposition(Amendment) Bill, 2018' was passed unanimously on Wednesday. The salary hike is up to Rs. 45,000 per month and will be paid with the arrears with retrospective effect from December 22, 2017. The current salaries of legislators including perks and allowances will be now Rs. 1,16,316 per month from Rs 70,727.

The ruling party, citing the assembly rules had shown incapability to make any special announcement for farmers or common public giving them relief from soaring prices. But the bill proposing salary hike was introduced as a surprise element with short notice in the house and was passed unanimously. The bill was not part of the order of the day till the morning and by the afternoon it was passed in the house.

The minister of state for legislative and parliamentary affairs Pradipsinh Jadeja proposed the bill and said that the long pending demands from legislators pushed the government to increase the salaries as the MLAs had to incur huge expenses.

The deputy leader of opposition Shailesh Parmar said, “The demand to raise the salary from Congress members was to give MLAs a chance of having a respectable lifestyle. The MLAs who are lawmakers draw less salaries than the junior most Class-1 officer who implements laws. In fact, the salary should have been revised more taking it at par with secretary level.

The deputy CM and finance minister Nitin Patel said, “The government has increased the salaries of MLAs taking all the factors into account and that is sufficient. This will cost state government Rs 10 crore more. Those who wish to accept the hike can take it or else they can deny getting increment.”

Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, however, opposed the increment.

Mevani expressed his resentment and said,  “The BJP ruled government is hiring class IV employees including sweepers through outsourcing and giving petty salaries to them. I register my opposition here with the demand to increase their salaries too.” However, he said that he will accept the salary hike.
