Eleven days after the communal clashes, panic gripped riot-hit Kasganj again when unidentified miscreants tried to set ablaze a mosque early Monday morning in communally sensitive Ganjudwara area in the district.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) Kasgnaj Piyush Srivasatava said that some unidentified persons threw kerosene on the door of a religious place in Gunjdudwara area and put it on fire at around 3 am on Monday morning. However, there was no major damage to the religious place, he added.

Fire tenders were rushed in time to douse the fire. Except for the mosque door, no major damage was done to the mosque. The fresh incident of arson caused communal tension in Kasganj again and majority of the markets did not open on Monday for fear of any fall-out of the incident.

A case has been registered against unidentified persons. Two constables, who were on the night duty in the area, have been suspended for dereliction of duties in connection with the fresh attempt of violence.

Soon after the incident, Rapid Action Force (RAF) did a flag march in the communally-sensitive area to maintain peace and communal harmony. More police force was deployed in the area and other sensitive places. Despite heavy security bandobast, fresh spell of violence has put a big question mark on state government’s claim to restore normalcy and communal harmony in the district.

After a Peace Committee meeting in the afternoon, a few traders opened their shops. However, more than half of the markets remained closed despite assurance from the District Magistrate R.P. Singh and Peace Committee members.

Communal riots had broken out on Republic Day in Kasganj following dispute between the members of the two communities over Tiranga Yatra. One Chandan Gupta was killed and over a dozen persons were injured in the firing and violent incident that followed on January 26 and onwards.
