Five killed as jeep falls into gorge in Uttarakhand

Five persons were killed and seven others injured when the jeep they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Kalsi area of this district today, the police said.

The people were returning from a wedding ceremony in Rampur when the incident took place at Nagnath in Kalsi, an official at Kalsi Police Station said.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, he said.

The rescue operation was carried out by police teams from Kalsi and Vikasnagar Police Stations along with the villagers, he said, adding the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.

Expressing grief at the loss of lives in the accident, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 5,0000 for those seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for those who suffered minor injuries.
