Earthquake hits West Bengal; three dead, 40 students injured in Malda

West Bengal was rocked by major aftershocks in the wake of the 7.9 earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday afternoon. Reports of two dead and several injured in West Bengal have emerged so far. As many as 40 students were also injured following a school collapse in Malda.
 
One woman from Diamond Harbour and a man from Jalpaiguri district were reportedly killed in the incident.
 
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the setting up of control rooms at Siliguri and Darjeeling. “Emergency #earthquake control room for #Bengal has been set up. Siliguri, Darjeeling and other areas. The number is 1070 #alerts,” tweeted Banerjee. 

A hospital in Siliguri was evacuated after it developed cracks along the building and patients have been shifted to the open area near the hospital. In another incident, a nursing home in Cooch Behar district collapsed. The amount of damage is yet to be ascertained.
 
Buildings in and around Park Street have developed major cracks. The iconic Red Road has also developed cracks. 


The Park Street flyover has developed cracks due to the quake. 

Meanwhile, the Alipore Met office has put Kolkata on high alert. The IT-hub in Salt Lake and several commercial complexes across the state have been vacated and office goers are still waiting outside.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the state government is monitoring the situation closely and urged people to stay calm in the wake of the earthquake. "We are monitoring situation closely in Bengal specially in Darjeeling/Siliguri. Spoke to Sr Disaster Management team & others," Banerjee tweeted.

"My prayers with the people of Nepal and across India after the massive earthquake. Hope everyone is safe. Stay calm," she said in the micro-blogging site.

Concerned over the situation in Bengal following the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Bengal Chief Minister.
