The West Bengal unit of the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPM) has decided to raise the issue of electoral alliance with the Congress at the two-day politburo (PB) meeting of the party which got underway in Delhi on Monday.

Tactical differences with the Prakash Karat faction had forced CPM state unit to part ways with the Congress after Bengal assembly polls. But the humiliation in the bypolls triggered a panic reaction in the party, which sees the possibility of total marginalisation in the state, polarised on religious lines.

This is the worst phase of the party which is at a loss to strategise on measures to counter saffron surge in Bengal. Little did the CPM state unit realise that the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress would be able to polarise the electorate in such a short period. The BJP's ascendancy is linked to the alleged Muslim appeasement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The CPM unit has, therefore, decided to prevail upon the reluctant central committee to allow an alliance with the Congress for the forthcoming municipal and panchayat polls and reassert its position as viable political alternative to Trinamool. The political dynamics in Bengal is such that in the coming days, Trinamool and BJP would woo their respective constituencies more vigorously with the ulterior objective of pushing CPM and the Congress out of contention.

Party insiders feel that the best way to impress upon the Prakash Karat faction on the need to forge an alliance with the Congress would be to create consensus on the choice of Sitaram Yechuri for Rajya Sabha. And this is possible only with support of the Congress.
