A police constable was killed after heavily armed terrorists launched a massive counter offensive against the security forces when they were trying to close in on their hideout in Hajin village of North Kashmir's Bandipora district on Sunday.

Constable Zaheer Abbas Khan was part of the security forces team when terrorists opened a barrage of fire at Mir Moholla in Bandiproa district. A resident of Poonch district in Jammu, Khan received serious wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed. However militants later managed to escape from the cordon

"Bandipora police along with 13 Rashtriya Riffles and the 45th battalion of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Mir Mohalla area of Bandipora district. During search operation, terrorists hiding in the area fired upon the joint search party. Constable Zaheer Abbas Khan was injured and was shifted to hospital for treatment where he achieved martyrdom," said a police spokesperson.

Zaheer Abbas Khan is survived by aged parents, wife and three minor children — Mehtab Zaheer 10, Manik Ahmad, eight and Sumaira Zaheer, five. Tributes were paid to the martyr for displaying exemplary bravery while taking on the heavily armed militants. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and senior officers paid tributes and placed floral wreaths on the body of the slain constable. Senior police and civil administration officers too paid their last respects to the martyrs.
