Former prime minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda on Saturday morning staged a protest in front of Jeevan Bhima Nagar Police Station, in Bengaluru, demanding the police to release the supporters of Ayesha Begum, the JD(S) candidate from Jeevan Bhimanagar ward.

Ayesha Begum alleged that the police was harassing her supporters and even sealing three shops owned by her supporters in the ward. Begum said that police sealed the shops on the claiming they were distributing money to voters.

“We are not rich to distribute money to the voters. The police have been harassing my supporters. I complained to Sri Deve Gowdaji about police harassment. I am very happy with the response of Deve Gowdaji, who has come all the way from Padmanabhanagar to Jeevan Bhima Nagar," she said.

Condemning the police harassment, Deve Gowda said the state government has been trying to scuttle the prospects of JD(S) candidates in the BBMP election on one pretext or the other. “The state government was not interested in conducting elections for the BBMP Council. I want the police to not harass the supporters of other political parties,’’ Deve Gowda said.

The movement of traffic on Jeevan Bhima Nagar Main Road was affected when JD(S) supporters and onlookers gathered in front of the police station. Gowda left for JP Park ward where the JD(S) candidate’s husband was arrested by the police on the charges of distributing money to the voters on Friday night.
