I am a 27-year-old working professional. Over the last few months, I’ve noticed my nails turn yellow and rather stained. How do I get rid of these yellow stains and whiten them naturally?

Though it is pretty easy to maintain nails well, at times, they could look unattractive when they turn yellow or appear stained.  This could be caused due to pigments in bright or dark nail paints and acetone nail paint removers. This nail discolouration could also be a cause of fungal infections, lack of proper nutrition and poor lifestyle habits. However to cope with this nail problem better, here is are quick home remedies you could use:

Lemon and baking soda

Lemon is an effective bleaching agent with exceptional antiseptic and antibacterial properties which help clear excessive yellow stains. Similarly, baking soda comes with exfoliating properties that are great for healthy nails. Mix these two ingredients to resolve your nail issue.

Steps:

  • Take a bowl and fill it half way with some lemon juice and add some baking soda to it.
  • Mix this this well and apply onto your cuticles.
  • Leave it on for 10-15 minutes.
  • Once done, wash it off well with lukewarm water.
  • Apply a moisturiser thoroughly all over your nails and hands. Do this 2 times a day for desired results.

Toothpaste

Since toothpastes may contain some amount of hydrogen peroxide, it’s tooth whitening properties work effectively for the nails too. Be cautious of the hydrogen peroxide content which shouldn’t be more than 3%.

Steps:

  • Apply some toothpaste all over your nails and leave it for 10-15 minutes.
  • Use a nail brush or a soft tooth brush and gently scrub your nails.
  • Soak cotton balls in lukewarm water and clean out the toothpaste on your nails.
  • Carry on with this at least 2-3 times a week.

Additionally, to shield your nails against discoloration, apply a transparent base coat before moving on to bright colours. This is also beneficial to help your manicure or pedicures last longer. Try to use a buffer on your nails as and when, this could also help in fading those yellow stains. You could try and apply some lemon juice and almond oil for healthy nails as well.
