'The Hobbit' takes top spot at weekend box office with $31.5m earnings

The film Anchorman 2, which released on Wednesday, took Friday earnings of $8.7 million before being trampled by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The comedy sequel is looking at a three-day haul of $26 million to The Hobbit’s $30 million frame, Fox News reported. In its first five days, Anchorman 2 is projected to earn nearly $40 million, right in the centre of pre-weekend expectations.

On Friday, Warner Bros’ The Hobbit crossed both the $300 million worldwide milestone and the $100 million mark domestically
