Here's how 'Court' director reacted to the Oscar selection

Marathi film Court on Wednesday was selected as India's official entry to the Oscars next year. The film was declared the winner of the National Award for Best Feature Film in March this year. 

The film revolves around a case of abetment of suicide filed against a 'Lok Shahir' or a ballad singer in a lower court in Mumbai involving legal action against him including those under the controversial UAPA (the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). The courtroom drama, directed by debut filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane, was released in over 150 screens across India on April 17.

On being selected as India's official entry for the Oscars this year, the director Chaitanya Tamhane explained that the selection has surprised him and producer Vivek Gombar. He told a leading website that ever since they started making the film, they had kept low expectations from the film but the film has always surprised them by giving much more than what they wanted. 

Having said that, the director also thanked the jury for their decision and also thanked the audience for their support. Last year, it was Nawazuddin Siddiqui-Geetanjali Thapa starrer Liar's Dice that was chosen as India's official entry for the Oscars. But the film could not make it to the top 5.
