The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is gearing up for the second edition of 'Swachh Survekshan' (cleanliness survey) taken up by the Central government under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).

The survey this year will look at the 'status of cleanliness work' taken up by municipal corporations across 100 Indian cities.

"We are laying stress on taking people's feedback and achieving 100 per cent results from routine drives against open defecation, anti-spitting drive and use of smart toilets," said a senior official.

While these activities are part of the day to day routine, the official said, the NDMC is going to focus on these aspects of cleanliness to declare the area 'open defecation free'.

The Council, which covers the Lutyens' Zone, stood in the top 15 of the 476 municipalities across the country, taken under assessment last year.

Also, the Council has formed a special team of officials looking after each department dealing with the projects — e-waste management, smart dustbins, smart toilets, garbage disposal compactors, sanitation ambassadors and door to door garbage collection.

"We have appointed members of RWAs, market associations, schools and those in JJ clusters to look after the cleanliness in their area and send a report for the same. Involving citizens in such activities gives a great boost to the projects and encourages them to keep their city clean," he said.

The Swachh Survekshan scheme was introduced after the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched in 2014.

"The survey is intended to measure the impact and take stock of the state of various aspects of cleanliness recommended under the Mission by the major cities," the official said.

Last year, Mysuru has topped the list of 'clean cities' followed by Chandigarh, Tiruchirappalli and the NDMC area of the national Capital. Meanwhile, Dhanbad in Jharkhand was ranked the worst.

Besides, the other cities that found a place in the 10 'cleanest category' in the survey included Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Surat (Gujarat), Rajkot (Gujarat), Gangtok (Sikkim), Pimpri-Chindwad (Maharashtra) and Greater Maharashtra.
