Non-functioning CCTV cameras in the Andh Mahavidyalaya on Panchkuian Road are proving to be a hurdle in the investigation of cases of sexual abuse of hostel inhabitants. The police have begun the probe in one of the cases reported on January 27 and have registered an FIR.
The FIR stated: "A gang of former students, most of them overaged, have been mentally and sexually harassing the students under the influence of drugs and alcohol on the hostel premises."
DNA had reported on Tuesday that in the last four months, the school Principal has sent three letters to the Delhi government, mentioning incidents of sexual abuse, bullying, rampant drinking, and substance abuse in the school hostel, where visually-impaired adults, aged 18-55 years, far outnumber the minor inhabitants. The letters bore no response.
Meanwhile, a police team visited the school on Wednesday to speak with the authorities.
"The CCTV cameras installed in the school are not functional. We are still looking for some solid evidence against the accused. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty," a police officer said.
Requesting anonymity, a senior official at the school said: "Of the 103 inhabitants at the hostel, only 43 are students. Despite us taking up the issue with the Department of Education (DoE) of the Delhi government several times, there is no warden to supervise them. These adults even share rooms with the students."
The hostel inmate who filed the police complaint said: "We have specifically mentioned the names of these adult members in the complaint. Still, no action has been initiated against them. They have continued to spread terror in the hostel premises."
Meanwhile, shrugging off responsibility, the Delhi government has stated that the school is not fully aided by them and that they have no role in the management of its hostel.
