Michael Vaughan has rated the current Indian team among the most 'underachieving sports team', saying they fail far too frequently for the talent they possess.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed disappointment in India's cricket team, labeling them as one of the most underachieving in the world. Despite possessing considerable talent and resources, India has failed to secure an ICC trophy for over a decade, prompting Vaughan to raise questions about their performance.
During a Fox Sports panel discussion at the MCG, Vaughan initiated a conversation on India's cricket team during the second Test between Australia and Pakistan. He directed a pointed question to former Australian batsman Mark Waugh, asking if he considered India to be among the most underachieving sports teams globally. However, Waugh chose to deflect the question back to Vaughan.
Vaughan emphasized India's recent lack of significant victories despite their talent pool, stating, "They haven't won much in recent times. I think they are (an underachieving side). They don't win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill-set, they should have achieved more."
While acknowledging India's impressive Test series victories in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21, Vaughan criticized their performance in major tournaments, especially in World Cups. He highlighted India's absence in the latter stages of recent World Cups and T20 World Cups, contrasting it with their success in Australia. Vaughan concluded by expressing his belief that India, with their abundant talent and resources, should have accomplished much more in international cricket. "They're a good team. They have got plenty of talent, but with all the talent they have and the resources they have, I just don't think they win," he remarked.
