Hailing the role of technology in bringing transparency in governance, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi narrated the success of direct benefit transfer of gas subsidy, in reference to the flagship Ujjwala Yojana, to the Indian Diaspora here.

?Technology brings transparency. It integrates the leadership and governance. With the help of technology, direct benefit transfer debit schemes like the gas subsidy have proved successful,? he told the gathering.

He added that the common people of India are driven with their desire to contribute to the growth of the country, so much so that lakhs of them gave up the subsidy to help those in need.

?Gas subsidy is given equally to the rich and the poor. So, I requested the people that if they were well-off, then they should give up their subsidy and you would be amazed to know that above one crore families gave it up. These common people are driven with their desire to contribute to the prosperity of the country,? he said.

?This subsidy was later used for the welfare of poor families, who did not have gas connections. We even informed all the people, who gave up their subsidies, through letters about who were provided with the gas connection with the money,? he added.

Hailing the success of the scheme, the Prime Minister said that in the coming three years, five crore poor families would be provided with gas connections.

?Within a span of 11 months we have already provided gas connections to more than one crore families,? he said.

The gas subsidy provided to the people is a part of the Prime Minister?s Ujjwala Yojana, which is proving to be extremely popular among masses.

The stated objective of the programme is providing 5,00,00,000 LPG connections to women from families below the poverty line. As of April 3, 2017, twenty million LPG connections had been completed.
