Varthur Prakash, the independent MLA from Kolar, is a disappointed man, but determined to realise his ambition of bagging a cabinet berth within a week.

A day after his much anticipated swearing-in as a minister was deferred due to bickerings in the ruling BJP, Prakash landed at chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s Race Course Road residence early in the morning on Wednesday to convey a strong message.

“Dissidence is a problem of the BJP and I have nothing to do with it. I cannot be made to wait just because there are too many contenders among the BJP MLAs for ministerial berths,” Prakash is said to have told the chief minister.

According to sources, Prakash has set one week deadline for the chief minister to induct him into the cabinet with a veiled threat of reconsidering his decision to support the BJP, if his demand was not fulfilled.

Emerging out of the meeting, Prakash said, “The chief minister has assured that cabinet expansion would happen within two days after Deepavali.”

When asked about the disappointment due to the last minute cancellation of cabinet expansion on November 3, Prakash said, “I can understand the problems that forced the chief minister to defer it. But he has assured me that he will fulfill the promise and it is likely to happen a day or two after Deepavali.”

Reddys and ministerial aspirants stay away from BJP meet
Several ministerial aspirants and the Reddy brothers from Bellary stayed away from the BJP state executive meeting, which started on Wednesday in Mysore.

Addressing the meeting amid fears of another crisis gripping the party due to rampant dissidence in the party, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and party state president KS Eshwarappa advocated tough stand to crush dissidence.

“The 11 BJP rebels and five  independents are now repenting the rebellion.  It is a lesson for others in future. Cabinet expansion will happen soon in consultation with party’s central leadership,” Yeddyurappa said.
