A murder convict lodged in the Gulbarga jail may be interrogated for his alleged role in supplying illegal firearms to rowdy-politician Nana alias Ismail Sheriff, aged 36.

Besides Nana, police have also arrested Mardan Suleman Khan, 26, in the illegal firearm case. It has been alleged that Khan, brother of murder convict Yousuf Bachkana alias Yousuf Suleman Qadri, had handed over the country-made pistols to Nana, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2008 state assembly election on a BSP ticket.

Sharp-shooter and contract killer Bachkana was arrested and convicted for murdering a builder, Subbaraju, in Seshadripuram on January 5, 2001.

The police arrested Khan of Thanisandra on May 28, while he was handing over two pistols in a Toyota Qualis car on Muslim Colony Water Tank Road. It has been alleged that Khan was acting according to his brother Bachkana’s instruction.

“Investigation confirms that Bachkana allegedly supplied the firearm to Nana through his brother. So we have named him also as an accused in the FIR. We will take him into our custody for interrogation. But, it will take some time. We want to know how he is still actively smuggling firearms,” a senior east-division police officer said.

Police said Nana had requested Bachkana, a Chhota Rajan associate, over phone to supply two pistols and five bullets for Rs1.3 lakh. The convict arranged the firearms and sent them with his two associates.

They gave the pistols to Khan with an instruction to deliver it to Nana. Police swooped down on Nana and Khan after receiving “credible information” about the transaction. Besides the pistols, five rounds of live ammunition, Rs5 lakh and the Toyota Qualis were seized.

Investigators said Bachkana had been carrying out criminal activities from the jail. The Gulbarga police have slapped a criminal case on him in January this year.

It has been alleged that he had received supari (contract money) from rowdy Bettanagere Shankara, to eliminate his rival Bettanagere Seena alias Srinivas, who was lodged in Gulbarga jail at that time.

But, the murder was foiled after the jail authorities conducted a raid and seized lethal weapons and firearms from a cell.
Nana has been facing more than 33 cases registered at KG Halli, DJ Halli, Bharathinagar, Commercial Street and Parappana Agrahara police stations. He was detained under Goonda Act in 2009 and released a year later.
