Five days after 13-year-old Abhilash died in an avoidable school bus accident, the management of his school, Sarjapur-based St Philomena High School, paid an amount of Rs4 lakh as compensation to his family.

The Sarjapur police said the school management rushed to Abhilash’s residence in Chokkarasanapalli in Hosur taluk of Tamil Nadu to express their condolence and paid Rs4 lakh in cash as immediate compensation.

The payment was confirmed by V Chandraiah, the school trust secretary, as well as Abhilash’s father Lokesh.

But that’s not the end as far as compensation is concerned. “The quantum of compensation is yet to be decided. We are talking about it with Abhilash’s parents. We will also ensure that an insurance amount is paid to the bereaved family,” Chandraiah said.

The compensation comes after the school came under severe criticism for its apathetic attitude towards the school transportation, and over the kind of negligent drivers employed by it.
