Taking active participation in several programmes in the city on the eve of World Environment Day, Jairam Ramesh, Union environment minister, said that India will be a nation of the young in the coming decade, and safeguarding the nature for their future is the need of the hour.

"We are hosting the World Environment Day after 38 years. This is an opportunity to send signals to the globe that India is playing a significant role in the environmental policies and their implementation," said Jairam.

"The next decade will have a huge young population in this country for whom we have to safeguard nature and natural resources," he added.

He inaugurated a residential complex in the campus of Wood Science Institute and Technology in Malleswaram. An exhibition was also organised by the institute. He shared some moments with special children and answered many of their questions and encouraged them for a brighter future.

To a question posed by a child on why they have to pay a huge fee to enter museums and parks, he said, "I assure you that entry for special children will be made free very soon."

Regarding projects in Western Ghats, he said, "The Western Ghats is a sensitive ecological treasure, and the projects that are lying on the tables are being scrutinised by the Madhav Gadgil team to see to it that the project development does not exploit natural resources."

He added that studies by the special team would be completed within a month and he would look into each of them and clear the projects. The Hubli-Ankola rail link is one such project awaiting clearance from the Union environment ministry.
