The longest passenger aircraft in the world is all set to touch down at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA).

The BIA will soon see the Boeing 747-800 rolling on the tarmac, as it has received the necessary clearance from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the country’s civil aviation regulator.

“The Boeing 747-800 is a Code F aircraft, with a wing span slightly more than the Boeing 747-400 (Code E), and in terms of length it is the longest aircraft. Based on inputs provided by Boeing, the Bangalore International Airport Limited has done safety risk assessment for the B747-800 operations and, accordingly, has received the approval to permit regular operations of this type of aircraft from the DGCA,” airport officials told DNA.

The Boeing 747-800 (whose wingspan measures 68.4 metres) is classified as a Code F aircraft by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), while the Boeing 747-400 (wingspan: 64.4 m) is classified as a Code E aircraft.

The BIA and the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi will be the two airports in the country to operate the aircraft. German carrier Lufthansa recently announced that it will deploy the aircraft on its Delhi-Frankfurt and Bangalore-Frankfurt routes in its current summer schedule.

Bangalore and Delhi will not only be the first Indian cities, but also the first Asian cities to operate the Boeing 747-800.
This apart, the BIA has also said that a Code F compliant stand is being created as part of the airport’s Terminal (T1) expansion project. The stand will have the capability to accommodate the Airbus A380 aircraft as well.

The expanded T1 terminal is scheduled to be operational by early 2013.

Though the BIA would be creating a Code F compliant stand, the Airbus A380, the largest commercial aircraft, is unlikely to operate in India anytime soon, as the government is yet to give clearance for the aircraft to operate in the country.
