For the first time a Karnataka academy will be transcending its jurisdiction to achieve its objectives and implement its agenda.

The Karnataka State Konkani Sahitya Academy, tasked with promoting Konkani language and culture, will hold a series of cultural and language based activities in Kerala.

The new academy president, Kasargod Chinna, who assumed office on Monday, said that plans were afoot to reach out to the Konkani people across the border. “Kerala has a good number of Konkani speaking people and also experts who have contributed to the enrichment of Konkani language and culture. We are trying to reach out to them,” Chinna told DNA. “In fact, this year the Kerala government has also constituted its own Konkani sahitya academy,” he added.

As a first step, the academy is holding the ‘Gadinadu Konkani Samskriti Sambhrama’on September 17 and 18 to bring Konkani people from Kumble, Kasargod, Badiyadka, Manjeshwar, Neeleshwar and Payyanur on a single platform. The highlight of the event will be a Konkani Yakshagana ballet titled ‘Veera Abhimanyu’ by an all women Yakshagana troupe from Shimoga.

“The inter-state Konkani cultural exchanges will get an impetus with this programme and experts from different Konkani speaking areas will come together. Konkani experts in Kerala are also well versed with Malayalam and many  have done a great deal of research work in Konkani using Malayalam script, but the larger treasure lies in inter-cultural studies in the fields of theatre, literature, folk and performing arts, translation and transliteration,” said academy registrar Dr B Devadas Pai.

Former academy member Mangalpadi Namadeva Shenoy, who has enriched Konkani  in Kerala, said, “The initiative taken by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy is commendable. There is a rich treasure of literature in Malayalam which can be translated into Konkani and vice versa.” Konkani is spoken by Gowd Saraswath Brahmins, Catholics, Shets, Rajapuri Saraswath Brahmins and Karadasthas in Kerala.
