This shocking incident may be reminiscent of three Tamil Nadu ministers standing as mute spectators as a policeman bled to death after a gang chopped his legs two years ago.

But Tumkur Rural BJP MLA Suresh Gowda on Sunday went a step ahead in shaming his political fraternity when his car fatally knocked down a 70-year-old man in full view of the victim’s family members in front of SLR Convention Hall in Nelamangala on NH 4 — the MLA scooted from the spot, leaving his driver with the car involved in the accident.

The septuagenarian, Thimma Hanumanthaiah, a former employee of HMT who represented the public sector enterprise on its volleyball team, was rushed to the nearby Harsha Hospital, which then referred his case to Columbia Asia in Yeshwanthpur, where he finally died in the afternoon.

The car, in which Gowda was travelling with four others, hit Hanumanthaiah at around 9.30 am when he was crossing NH-4 to enter SLR Convention Hall. Hanumanthaiah had got down from his car at the footpath opposite to SLR Convention Hall, informing his family members that he would rather cross the road on foot than drive for another 500 metres to take U-turn and return to the hall. He had crossed the road till the central median and was about to cross the rest of the road to the convention hall when Gowda’s speeding car (bearing registration number KA-06-M-9818 and driven by his driver Dayananda, 32) knocked him down.

Nelamangala police told DNA that Hanumanthaiah’s family members who witnessed the accident told them that immediately after the accident, Gowda instead of helping the dying man, called for an alternative car and drove away in it followed by his followers and friends. “He did not even try and help Hanumanthaiah shift to a hospital,” the police said.

Later in the day, on learning about Hanumanthaiah’s death, Gowda reacted from Tumkur merely with an assurance of paying compensation to deceased’s family members and “helping them with their problems”, before adding that “the person is dead and cannot be brought back to life”.

Hanumanthaiah was living with his wife, a son and two daughters in Someshwaranagar in South Bangalore. His body was handed over to his family members after a post mortem was conducted in MS Ramaiah Hospital.
