While the BJP and Congress are focused on the Bellary Rural by-poll, Janata Dal (Secular) supremo HD Deve Gowda has sounded his party’s bugle for the next assembly elections. “We will field our candidates in all 224 assembly constituencies in Karnataka and our natural allies, the Left parties, will continue to be our friends,” he said in Mangalore on Sunday.

“The socio-political atmosphere in the country will change soon. Congress bastions are eroding and the BJP’s limited mandate module will not work in the next elections. Parties will have to be more inclusive, socially responsible and secular. After the recent elections in Bihar and Kerala, parties have to take definite stand on their affiliations, convictions and programmes. They (parties) will have to field candidates from every community, caste and religion based on their integrity and social concern,” he added.
Is he predicting an election?  To this, Gowda answered: “I am not predicting anything, but the country is moving towards this eventuality. The so-called two national parties have found their ideological bases being torn apart by corruption, self-interest and non-performance. The people are looking towards regional parties and coalitions to give political stability and administration. In this condition, I would bank on parties that have prudent economic policies rather than just past glory,” said Gowda.

At this point of his political career, Gowda said he’d hate to see splintering of political parties. “If I were to split the BJP in the state, taking advantage of the present conditions in that party, I could have done so long back with ease but my conscience does not approve of it,” he said.

“Santosh Hegde is a man of high standards. He is a great jurist and committed to fighting corruption. He will increase his stature in public life if he chose not to answer every allegation made by corrupt politicians of the BJP,” he added.

Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda is a puppet in the hands of his party seniors, said Gowda. “I feel sorry for him, but if the BJP high command gives him autonomy and protects him from people who are trying to control him, he has the right disposition towards giving a non-corrupt and good administration,” noted Gowda.
