This year’s Dasara procession will be free of those planning to ‘crash the party’ as there’s a strict dress code. The decision was taken after the district Dasara committee realised that the procession was looking sloppy and lacklustre as some people were walking alongside the elephants and other ceremonial tableaux.

“From the video footage and photographs, we noted that many casually-dressed persons who did not have anything to do with the procession were part of it. They also waved to the people and tried to assume false importance. This tarnished the procession’s image,” said district in-charge minister SA Ramdas.

Only those possessing a valid pass and who have stuck to the dress code will be allowed to participate. Participants must be inside the palace at least two hours before it begins.

Musicians, scholars and public figures have been asked to wear traditional Mysore dresses to participate in the procession—men will wear Kachche Panche with kurta and angavastram, while women will wear matching sarees. “This way, we can spot the odd persons participating in the procession right away,” said Ramdas.

“People used to ride on tableaux vehicles in the past and we have stopped this practice. People can watch the procession without any hindrance along the 5.6-km procession, but they have to stand at a distance of 15-20 meters. In some places, the distance could be less. Building-owners have been requested not to let people atop their buildings as some of them are old buildings,” said police officials.

Landmarks such as KR Circle pose a problem due to its crowd density. “We have deployed 10,000 police personnel, including the City Armed Reserve, Karnataka State Reserve Police, Central Reserve Police Force, Rapid Response Commandos, Central Industrial Security Force and Home Guards.

NCC cadets will be stationed between Amba Vilas Palace and Torchlight Parade grounds at Bannimantap. A bomb disposal squad has been summoned from Bangalore. The Dasara procession will be inaugurated by chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda.

He will perform the Nandi Dhwaja puja at Balarama Gate of Amba Vilas Palace at 12.45 pm on Vijayadashami day. The procession will begin after he showers flowers upon the Goddess Chamundeshwari idol placed inside the golden howdah on the lead elephant Balarama.
