Days after strays allegedly killed two-and-a-half-year-old Sandeep at Yelahanka New Town and injured two-and-a-half-year-old Kajol in Happy Valley Layout at Uttarahalli, a four-year-old girl was attacked by a pack of four dogs in Bilekahalli near Bannerghatta Road on Wednesday. The dogs pounced on Renuka around 6am as she came out of her ‘shed house’ to answer nature’s call.
The strays dragged the little girl some distance and bit her on the right leg, ankle, thigh, right hand and abdomen. Hearing her scream, Renuka’s parents woke up and rushed to her rescue, driving the dogs away.
With the help of residents of the area, they took Renuka to a nearby private hospital. She was given first aid and anti-rabies vaccination. She was later taken to Apollo Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, for further treatment.
According to the local residents, the family was living in a shed in Bilekahalli along with families of at least 300 construction labourers. The shed was located close to an open drain, which posed a threat to children of construction workers. The residents claimed that they have taken several complaints to the BBMP about aggressive stray dogs in the area.
BBMP’s joint director, animal husbandry, Dr Pervez Ahmed Piran, said that following complaints from people in the area, many stray dogs were rounded up and sent to the animal birth control centre.
Bilekahalli ward corporator Roopa Ramesh said the number of stray dogs had been on the rise in the area. It had become difficult for people to walk in the area, especially at night, as the dogs were often aggressive. The corporator said the matter would be raised in the council meeting.
