Five boys, all aged 9, drowned in the Gangamma Lake at Tavarekere in Ramanagara district on Thursday afternoon.

Fire and rescue services personnel fished out all the five bodies by 10 pm. The boys, all standard IV students of the Government Higher Primary School at Tavarekere, had gone for a swim during the lunch break.

The police identified the boys as Ajit Kumar, Vishwa Raj, Somashekar, Sohel Khan and Praveen.

Though the boys did not return to school after lunch, the parents of the drowned boys started to worry as they failed to reach their respective homes much after school time.

On enquiring, the classmates of the boys said they had not returned after the lunch break. The parents went on a search, and, at 6.30pm, found the clothes of the boys on the bank of the lake, about half a kilometre away from the school.

The police were immediately alerted. Rescue teams arrived at the spot from the fire and emergency services in Bangalore at 9pm.

By then, residents of the area had entered the shallow water to search for the missing boys.

Although the water was shallow, only five feet deep, the search for the missing boys was not easy because of the darkness.

It was only after 9.45pm that the bodies of the boys were found one after the other.

Although the fire and emergency services personnel were sent on the search and rescue mission at 7pm, they reached the spot only at 9pm. The delay was blamed on heavy traffic on Magadi Road which was congested up to Sunkadakatte.

With the death of the five boys on Thursday afternoon due to drowning, the total number of people drowned in the lakes in and around Bangalore in only the past eight days is ten.
