Emotions overflowed as hundreds of fans of the late Kannada matinee idol Vishnuvardhan celebrated the 61st birthday of the thespian on Sunday.

The sober event turned tense later in the afternoon as the fans headed towards Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce(KFCC) office at Kumara Park with a bust of Vishnu with a determination to install it at the premises.

Timely intervention by police averted an ugly turn of events, but the demand has put the KFCC in a quandary as there is not much space at the premises for installing the bust.

The fans—who arrived in a procession from Abhiman Studio in Uttarahalli, where the main function to celebrate the birthday was organised—carried the bronze bust of Vishnu with them. As the KFCC office-bearers were not present on a Sunday, the fans turned restive. The police were forced to intervene.

Sensing trouble, the police brokered peace by contacting the KFCC acting president Basanth Kumar Patil. The angry fans dispersed only after an assurance that the KFCC would hold discussions with the fans and other organisations on the issue on September 24.

A statue of Rajkumar has been already installed at the KFCC premises. “We are already facing space crunch at KFCC premises. We may lose even the available space as there is a proposal to widen the road. There will be no space at all for anything if the road widening happens,” Patil told DNA.

Patil further said that the statue could be installed at the Diamond Jubilee Bhavan of KFCC, which would be inaugurated in the next few days near Nandini Layout. “I am optimistic of convincing the fans on agreeing for installing the statue at the new premises.”

Earlier in the day, fans, led by the actor’s wife Bharathi and other family members, performed puja at Vishnu’s samadhi. Blood donation and eye donation camps were organised as part of the celebrations at the Abhiman Studio.

The park at Jayanagar 4th ‘T’ block, opposite Vishnu’s residence, was named after the hero on the occasion.

Bharathi and Vishnuvardhan’s fans expressed their displeasure with the state government for the delay in building the Vishnu memorial. They said they would build it on their own if no action was taken for its speedy completion.
