Langford Town is one of the city localities developed by the British after defeating Tipu Sultan in 1799. Some streets in the area—such as Alexandria Street, Wellington Street, Berlie Street—still have British names.

Residents of Langford Town are privileged as they don't have to worry about water shortage during summer when most parts of Bangalore are battered by water scarcity.

However, they are peeved by the condition of roads in the locality.

According to Shafik Ahmed, president, Citizens' Welfare Association of Richmond and Langford Towns (CWARLT), the BBMP authorities have taken measures to fill potholes on various roads but the quality of work has not been up to the mark.

“They have removed a few speed-breakers on Berlie Road but didn't take measures to fill up potholes developed due to the removal of the humps,” said Ahmed. The BBMP must also complete the development work at Richmond Park as early as possible, he said. "There is a lot to be done at the park.

The footpath near the park is not even and unfit for senior citizens.

Who’s in-charge?
Before the BBMP took up the development work, a company used to maintain the park. Now, it is not clear who will take up the park's maintenance. It would be better if a corporate house comes forward to maintain the park since the BBMP has been facing acute manpower shortage,'' he said.

Traffic trouble
Residents also want traffic police to come to their rescue during peak hours. "The ICICI Bank Junction requires a traffic signal to regulate vehicular movement. It has become difficult for us to use this road during peak hours. The police department must depute more traffic policemen at the junction to regulate vehicular movement,'' said Mirza Mohammad Ismail, general secretary, CWARLT.

Garbage is another challenge; one can find heaps of garbage at street corners.

“It has become a nuisance for us. The pourakarmikas start collecting waste from door to door after the garbage truck leaves for disposing the waste. The BBMP authorities have to direct pourakarmikas to collect waste before the garbage truck leaves. Residents have come forward to clear garbage on a few streets but that is not sufficient,” said a resident on the condition of anonymity.

Kathyayini Chamaraju, a resident, said it has become difficult for pedestrians to cross the road at the Nanjappa Circle due to high frequency of vehicles.

Zebra line
“With most vehicles on the zebra line, the pedestrians are not able to reach Berlie Street from Rhenius Street. The police have to draw a zebra line a few metres away from the existing one,” she said.

P Sowmya, corporator, Shantinagar, said she had taken measures to fill up potholes on Moyenville Road.

“Work to develop and repair footpaths will start in a few months,” Sowmya said.
