BBMP corporator N Chandra ordered his men to assault the chief conservator of forests, UV Singh, mistaking him for a junior officer trying to seize a tanker, emptying effluents into the Nagawara Lake, an investigator said on Friday.

During interrogation, Chandra reportedly told investigators that he had never thought the February 20 attack on Singh and accompanying officials would become a serious issue.

The interrogation also revealed that the corporator representing Ramaswamy Palya, who evaded arrest for 18 days, used to visit the city almost daily at nights, a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

Chandra and two of his associates, Kalim Pasha and Ravi, were arrested near Hosur in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday night. They were produced before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate on Friday, who remanded them to 15 days in judicial custody.

The arrested corporator also told the interrogators that BWSSB officials were aware of several tankers dumping waste into city lakes, but turned a blind eye to such activities.

Several waste disposal firms were also dumping waste to the Nagwara Lake, Chandra reportedly said.

The corporator was understood to have told the police that he had wished to surrender earlier, but heeded to his well wishers’ advice against courting arrest. Chandra and his men allegedly attacked Singh and others while the officials tried to prevent the tanker from depositing the effluents into the lake.

The corporator’s brother, Saravana’s firm was allegedly behind polluting the water body.
