The city police have resolved to crack two sensational cases, including the double murder of an elderly couple in Jayanagar.

The cases being re-looked into are the murders of retired deputy accountant general AS Venkata Rangan, 80, his wife Vasantha, 75, and that of a businessman, Aravinda Basavaraju, 53.

Deputy commissioner of police Sonia Narang, who took charge of the south division less than a month ago, sounded optimistic about solving the double murder case.  “We are working on certain strategies, and hope we can solve the Rangans murder case,” she said.

The Rangans were murdered in their Jayanagar T-Block residence on January 9, 2009, while Basavaraju was on August 9 the same year found slain in his coaching centre on the busy Dattatreya Road in Basavanagudi.

The police, unable to zero in on the culprits in Rangans murder case, had roped in the services of an Israel-based private detective agency. The agency had claimed they would solve in the case, but failed.

“We found their investigation process inaccurate. We are now on our own to solve these two cases,” said joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar.

The joint commissioner said that his officers have been instructed to take up the Basavaraju murder case, as there were clues pointing at a few suspects.

Basavaraju was stabbed at least 20 times with a screw driver. The incident came to light when his wife went to the coaching centre after repeated attempts to contact him over the mobile phone had failed. Besides Russian language, his centre had also been offering a course on “how to make money.”

The property which belonged to the Rangans was sold. Their house was razed to the ground, paving way to a multi-crore commercial establishment, now under construction.

During the early stages of investigation, the police had suspected the hand of an insider. It was also suspected that someone who wanted to purchase the property, against Rangans’ wishes, might have done the couple to death.

In the Basavaraju murder case, police suspected an old rivalry might be the motive. It was also suspected that the deceased had misbehaved with some girls, which might have led to the murder, as his private parts too bore stab injuries.

Those in the neighbourhood of Basavaraju’s Aravinda Institute said only girls used to visit the centre and the deceased used to collect Rs500 as fee. He had not employed anyone in the institute.
Basavaraju was a resident of I Min Road, near Corporation Bank, in Kengeri New Town.

The man’s valuables, including money, mobile phones and laptop were found untouched at the scene.
