A 15-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her house in Hongasandra on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Deepti, a student of Vidya Jyothi School at Jyothi Nagar on Begur Road. Her parents, Dinesh and Pushpa, worked in a garments factory.

Deepti came home after school at 6pm. She closed the door of her house, poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire. Neighbours, hearing the girl’s scream, rushed to the house to rescue the girl, but it was too late.

The Madiwala police rushed to the scene and shifted the body to Victoria Hospital for postmortem examination, which will be held on Tuesday morning. Preliminary investigations revealed that the girl did not finish her homework and a teacher had chided her. Deepti might have taken the extreme step because the teacher scolded her, said the police. “But we cannot take action against the teacher as she was only doing her duty,” police said.
