An Iranian student has been cheated of Rs1.75 lakh on the promise of securing him admission into a leading college in the city. Though the incident happened a year ago, the student, Naveed Rahimi Abkenari, lodged a police complaint only on February 14, since he was scared.

The alleged cheat, identified as Kamaran Mehdi, had threatened to kidnap and kill Abkenari, when the student demanded the money back, after he did not get admission into the college. Abkenari had arrived in the city in May last.

“I wanted to pursue my degree in Architecture. One day, while I was sitting in a Koramangala coffee shop, Kamaran Mehdi approached me. He said he was running a college and was also the consultant for college admissions for all Iranian students.”

The student handed over the copies of his passport, visa and other documents along with Rs1.75 lakh, which Mehdi said was towards admission. Abkenari said he paid the suspect at the latter’s office in Swastika College of Learning, HRBR Layout. Abkenari said he did not receive any receipt or acknowledgement from either Mehdi or BMS College, where he had been seeking admission.

When the college published the list of students admitted, Abkenari’s name was not there. The student was threatened when he met Mehdi again.

“When I went to his college, Kamaran threatened to kidnap and kill me if I visited his college or BMS College again. I was really scared, so remained quiet all this while. But now I want my money back,” he added. The Banaswadi police are investigating the case.
