The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) appointed by the Supreme Court has recommended a probe into the alleged kickbacks received by former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s family members from a mining company. This may destroy Yeddyurappa’s hopes of reinstatement as chief minister.
The report means there are strong grounds for the Supreme Court to order a probe by the CBI or CEC into Yeddyurappa’s alleged role in the illegal mining scam. The recommendation, coming on the eve of Yeddyurappa’s breakfast meeting with BJP MLAs to chart his strategies to regain the CM’s post, is expected to deliver a jolt to his plans. However, Yeddyurappa has decided to go ahead with the meeting on Friday. This would be followed by a luncheon at minor irrigation minister Govind Karajol’s residence.
The CEC, which investigated the petition filed by Samaj Parivartan Samudai into the alleged kickbacks paid by mining baron Praveen Chandra, noted that the state had—through a letter dated September 30, 2009—recommended to the Centre to grant mining lease.
Two payments
After obtaining approval of the Centre, the notification dated October 10, 2010, was issued by the state government to grant the mining lease.
Chandra, the lessee, made two payments—`2.5 crore to Bhagat Homes Pvt Ltd and `3.5 crore to Dhavalagir Property Developers Private Ltd. These payments are recorded in the balance sheets of these companies. The directors of the companies are relatives of Yeddyurappa.
The CEC further stated that the matter had to be investigated in public interest. Though the CEC has not mentioned the name of the agency for further investigation, Samaj Parivarthan Samudai chief SR Hiremath expressed confidence that his plea for a CBI probe would be upheld by the Supreme Court on April 13, when the court is expected to deliver its order.
