The fifth additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) court on Tuesday handed over the probe into the case of murder of Dell employee Payal Sureka to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The court asked the central agency to conduct “further investigation” into the gruesome killing.

Payal Sureka was found murdered at her Lakshman Nagar flat in JP Nagar on December 17, 2010. Her husband, gym instructor Anant Narayan Mishra, had left for his native place Cuttack in Orissa the previous day.

Within a week of the murder, the police claimed to have cracked the case and said Anant’s friend, James Kumar Roy, had murdered Payal.

The police contention was that James had killed Payal to get back at Mishra, who had terminated his services at a gymnasium that the Dell staffer’s husband owned in Orissa.

He was allegedly furious at Payal as she had warned her husband against having any truck with James, who had cheated Mishra in some financial matters.

The police had recovered the knife, James’ clothes, and Payal’s laptop which the alleged killer had taken away from the scene of crime. However, Payal’s parents and friends had insisted there was more to the murder than the police version of it.

Nanjunde Gowda, counsel for Deen Dayal Sureka, Payal’s father, told mediapersons, “My client alleges that Anant Narayan Mishra and his parents Rudra Narayan and Basanti have played a crucial role in hatching and executing the murder.”

“We strongly suspect that the JP Nagar police deliberately let out the names of these three persons as both Narayan and his wife are police officers,” he added.
