Bangalore University registrar BC Mylarappa on Wednesday inspected seven buildings at the Jnana Bharathi campus and found that many of them were in poor condition. The total cost to improve the university infrastructure is estimated to be Rs80 crore.

The registrar visited the health centre, swimming pool, visual arts department, applied genetics department, printing department and PG men’s hostel. The health centre had barely any facilities and was ill-equipped to handle any emergency. The main toilet was broken and did not have running water.

Inmates of the PG hostel complained about the abysmal state of their rooms and unkempt toilets. Many felt that despite many complaints and inspections, nothing much gets done. There were even complaints of snakes entering hostel rooms.

The swimming pool has been without water for three-four years, and the tiles have almost disappeared.

Work in the applied genetics department and printing machine department has been stalled since contractors have not been paid. The outstanding bill with the contractors is Rs10 crore.

Syndicate members KV Acharya and DS Krishna were present during the inspection.

“I will prepare a report and discuss the matter in the syndicate. I will also put in a word to the works committee. A copy of the report will also be submitted to government,” Mylarappa said.

The registrar said he would push the proposal with the higher education minister too.
